The story behind this design
A diamond grid has a direction built into it, since the long axis of each shape points somewhere. Running the rainbow along that axis rather than across it means the colors move in the same direction as the geometry, and the sheet gains a diagonal drift that a plain color block would not have. Wrapped around a box, that drift keeps traveling around the corners.
