The story behind this design
A belongs-to line is a small piece of stationery theatre and it needs the cover to leave it room, so the hydrangeas are pushed to the upper corner and the lower half is left almost bare. Hydrangea heads are useful here because each is a mass of tiny four-petalled florets, which reads as texture at the top of a page without turning into a picture. The blues are kept cool and the lilacs barely there, so pen or pencil shows up clearly on the printed line.
