The story behind this design

On pale cloth the design can use the garment as the white of the flag, so only the red and the blue are printed and the stripes between them are bare cotton. That saves ink and, more importantly, keeps the shirt soft where a solid full-coverage print would stiffen it. The blue is laid as a flat field while the red stripes are given a slight dry-brush edge, so the two read as different materials.
