The story behind this design
A single-motif repeat on a cylinder has to survive being seen from every angle at once, which is why these bees are drawn at a consistent size and set on a regular grid rather than scattered. Keeping flowers out of the design was the decision that makes it work: the bees read as a pattern, not as an illustration of a garden.
