The story behind this design
The whole design turns on the ground being colored rather than pale, which is unusual in this range: the medallions are drawn in a lighter tone on top of terracotta instead of the other way round. Giving the outlines a slightly broken, worn edge makes the print read as something that has been washed many times, which is the effect a crisp line would destroy.
