The story behind this design
The portrait is drawn in a single confident contour and then abandoned halfway, so the far side of the face dissolves into thrown color rather than resolving into features. The splash does the work the missing half would have done, and the viewer finishes the face themselves. Strong magenta and cobalt against bare ground keep the image legible even wrapped around a small jar.
